about

“…a kind of torn and frayed power pop…a record the reflects all the energy of a good night playing out plus adding something to that energy by way of arrangements, production, etc.” – In Pittsburgh Newsweekly

“…A fluctuation in musical styles that sometimes gets you thinking you’re listening to a compilation album of three or four different bands instead of just one.” – The Pitt News

“They deny it, but I detect a Doors influence.” - Pittsburgh DJ on a commercial station, introducing “All The Things…” on a local music show.

Stay Calm revealed how productive Bone of Contention had been in the ensuing years when it arrived three years after the Pittsburgh band’s first album (48 Points of View). The results came with far-reaching lyrical outlook. Lila Shaara could spew bile (“Crawl”) and love (“Smoke”) equally, or survey the post-apocalyptic landscape (“Sunbeam In My Soul,” “In the High Valley”) with amazing rhyming skills. Mike Shanley let his Minutemen flag fly (“Like Richard Brautigan, Lonesome On a Saturday Night,” “Bowling Pin” - the latter an open letter to the late D. Boon) and handed in his first song about the struggles of writing, a subject that would recur every few years — “All The Things You Could Be By Now If Henry Miller’s Wife Was Your Mother,” a title borrowed from Charles Mingus. (Incidentally, it owes absolutely nothing to the work of the Doors.) Barb Madaus, who switched from drums to guitar on her songs, offered a cathartic song about intense relationships (“Feeling Fade”) as well as laidback reflections of love (“Train Song”). Wise also turned in a spirited instrumental (“Exhilaration of the Youth”) that straddled a jam groove and the primitive hooks of a band like Pylon.

The original CD release paid homage to the analog past. Its sleeve design broke the 16 tracks into Side 1 and Side 2 programs. Additionally the disc opened and closed with the sound of the original record player from Shanley’s childhood home. The machine’s rhythmical moving parts were, to his young ears, a key part of the listening experience and saluted the days of vinyl. (However, that’s not the final sound on the disc. The album features an unlisted track, written and sung by Madaus and based on a true experience.)

Bart Wise passed away in 2018 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, and the re-release of this album is dedicated to him.

about

Bone of Contention Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Lila, Mike, Barb & Sean (and Bart, later on) played post-punk/pre-indie rock songs that were catchy and literate, sometimes funny and sometimes dark. The Bone (as they called themselves) lived in Pittsburgh from 1986-1995, Igor was their label. More back catalog releases to come in the near future. ... more
