about

“This boy-girl-boy-girl force from Pittsburgh write spry, nearly folksy, artsy-smartsy songs of distinction and mature bearing, deviating from conventional rhythm and arrangement with a forthright felicity that belies debut status.” – CMJ New Music Report

“Recalling the ubiquitous Jonathan Richman, as well as Scrawl and Antietam, BOC load the vinyl up with pleasant and catchy songs.” – Rockpool

“I find these ‘eclectic’ albums are often hit or miss; this one’s a hit.” – Factsheet Five

“What finally gives 48 Points of View an edge, though, is the band’s winning just-for-the-heck-of-it modesty. They may keep doing this stuff for years or we may never hear from them again.” – Option

With its front cover capturing an actual site known as the Purple Lady Shrine (which once stood in Munhall, PA), Bone of Contention’s first album was originally released in January 1990. It appeared on the band’s own label, Igor Records (named for guitarist Lila Shaara’s ornery cat).

For the first time since its initial release, 48 Points of View is now available digitally, remastered by Garrett Haines of Treelady Studios.

A fixture on the Pittsburgh scene throughout the late ‘80s/early ‘90s, Bone of Contention maintained a fairly egalitarian approach to songwriting during live sets. While bassist Mike Shanley and guitarist Lila Shaara wrote most of the material on the album, drummer Barb Madaus and guitarist Sean P. Lally also contributed songs and lead vocals.

At the time that the band went into Audiomation studios, the post-punk landscape and the band members themselves were wide open to numerous influences, which factor into the album. The title track recalls the feeling of early punk rock like 100 Flowers. “God, Or Something” has a dark, Dylan-esque lyrical bent, as does “Chained Melody,” which Shaara brought in from the Mutettes, an earlier band In North Carolina. The raw male-female harmonies on “Angels” drew the comparisons to X.

Wry humor often factored into the lyrics and this was no more prevalent than “Barbie Likes to Die.” This group composition (with lyrical assistance by future Minimalist Love God Rob Rayshich) changed lyrical shape with each performance, always ending when the song’s main character came to the conclusion that “it’s a cold and plastic world, Barbie.” Upon the album’s release, the song garnered some college radio airplay beyond Pittsburgh. Shanley has received emails as far away as Europe from people looking for a copy of the song. Some of the cultural references in the song might seem antiquated now, but the fact remains — there’s still no magic in Toy Land.

about

Bone of Contention Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Lila, Mike, Barb & Sean (and Bart, later on) played post-punk/pre-indie rock songs that were catchy and literate, sometimes funny and sometimes dark. The Bone (as they called themselves) lived in Pittsburgh from 1986-1995, Igor was their label. More back catalog releases to come in the near future. ... more
