about

"The two songs on this slab have a flannel feel to them, soft with melodies but still hard enough to shake your parents' cupboards! 'Sludge Creek has a P.C. feel. Two girls, two guys, who switch instruments. Can't wait for more!" - MaximumRocknRoll

"Alright, so the Bone isn't really at the forefront of the love revival, but it does make soothing, jangle-filled pop that you can make love to." - The Pitt News

By 1992, Bone of Contention had a solid lineup. Bart Wise had been in the band for over a year, replacing guitarist Sean Lally. The band had a enough material for a second album, but that would take another year.

In the meantime, they returned to Audiomation Studios, workiing with engineer Joe West (now a Grammy-winning producer and composer in Nashville). The results yielded a heavier sound on a Mike song and a Lila song. In "Sludge Creek," Mike tried to channel the bellow of Volcano Suns' Peter Prescott on the subject of the environment. More tongue-in-cheek than P.C. (as Max RnR heard it), the song didn't try to be too preachy about a serious topic. Lila's "Harmless" was a little darker, but tempered by semi-sweet backing vocals from Barb. It continued the band's love of instrument switching, with Mike and Barb playing the reversible rhythm section.

"Sludge Creek" / "Harmless" was released in a limited edition of 500, available in five different covers bearing some abstract illustrations by Rob Rayshich (Minimalist Love Gods, Bone auxiliary member).

This digital single is dedicated to the memory of Bart Wise, who passed away in 2018.

Bone of Contention Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Lila, Mike, Barb & Sean (and Bart, later on) played post-punk/pre-indie rock songs that were catchy and literate, sometimes funny and sometimes dark. The Bone (as they called themselves) lived in Pittsburgh from 1986-1995, Igor was their label. More back catalog releases to come in the near future. ... more
